NPHL has moved to an electronic ordering system, NUlirt, and it is now the preferred method to order all tests. Once ordered, print a "batch list" (see NUlirt Guide).

Forms Required - Nulirt batch list or NPHL Test Request Form (completed in entirety) must accompany the specimen to include the following information: symptoms and date of onset, pregnancy status, travel and vaccine history. Testing will not be performed without all required information.

Test: Ova and Parasite, Stool, Foreign Travel  
Synonym: O&P, foreign travel 
Method: Concentration procedure with Trichrome stain and microscopic examination  
Availability: Monday - Friday; results next day  
Specimen: Stool  
Collection Device: Use Proto-fix vial for preservation and add stool to fill line marked on Proto-fix vial. Seal and shake vigorously. Add bloody or watery portions of stool if present.  
Volume: Walnut size stool specimen or 10.0 mL of stool in preservative.  
Storage/Transport: Ambient  
Unacceptable: Specimens in PVA and formalin, dry specimens, leaking containers, specimens contaminated with oil, barium, or urine, mutliple specimens in 24 hour period, delayed transport to the lab  
Specimen Stability: Specimen is stable up to 4 days if in proper preservative.  
Reference Interval: No Ova & Parasites seen  
Reportable Disease:  
Comments: Collection of three specimens over a 10 day period is optimal. Indicate suspected parasites and patient history if applicable. Specimens analyzed to determine efficacy of treatment should be collected 3 - 4 weeks after treatment. Preservative available from Regional Pathology Services. This test is for patients who have had foreign travel or continued symptoms. If pinworm is suspected, pinworm collection kits are available from Regional Pathology Services and should be submitted instead of stool.
