NPHL has moved to an electronic ordering system, NUlirt, and it is now the preferred method to order all tests. Once ordered, print a "batch list" (see NUlirt Guide).

Forms Required - Nulirt batch list or NPHL Test Request Form (completed in entirety) must accompany the specimen to include the following information: symptoms and date of onset, pregnancy status, travel and vaccine history. Testing will not be performed without all required information.

Specimen: Serum .  
Collection Device: Ideally the collection devices are specially-prepared plain red top vacutainer that have been cleaned with methanol to reduce any inherent VOC's that may be present and then re-evacuated to create a vacuum. These types of tubes awill most likely not be present or available. Plain red top vacutainers can be used. They should be spun down and have the serum aliquoted as quickly as possible.  
Volume: Optimal: 2 mL Minimum: 1.5 mL  
Storage/Transport:

Specimens should be separated and aliquoted to clean plastic tubes within 20 minutes of collection

Aliquots then are immediately frozen at <= 20 ºC

  • Failure to maintain appropriate temperatures
  • Suspected contamination
  • Damaged collection tubes
