Comment: Sites submitting specimens for testing must be approved by the Nebraska Health and Human Services System's Epidemiology Program within the Department of Regulation and Licensure.

A Special Microbiology Requisition or order must accompany the specimens.

  TEST: Respiratory Syncytial Virus Direct Antigen Detection
  Synonym: RSV Direct
  Lab Defined: Microbiology/Virology
  Admin Section: Microbiology
  Method: EIA
  Availability: Daily; Routine results within 2 hours and stat results within 1 hour of specimen receipt in the Microbiology Laboratory.
  Specimen: Nasopharyngeal wash, aspirate, swab.
  Collect: Place specimen in viral transport media.
  Volume: 3.0 mL wash (Min: 2.0 ml)
  Transport: Refrigerate Must be received in lab within 72 hours.
  Comment: Unacceptable conditions: BAL,sputum, smears, bronchial washings.
  Reference Range: Negative
A negative screen does not rule out RSV.
