Testing Results
Comment: Sites submitting specimens for testing must be approved by the Nebraska Health and Human Services System's Epidemiology Program within the Department of Regulation and Licensure.

A Special Microbiology Requisition or order must accompany the specimens.

  TEST: Influenza type A and Influenza type B Antigen Detection
  Synonym: Flu A and B
  Lab Defined: Microbiology/Virology
  Admin Section: Microbiology
  Method: EIA
  Availability: Daily; Routine results within 2 hours and stat results within 1 hour of specimen receipt in the Microbiology Laboratory.
  Specimen: Nasopharyngeal wash, nasopharyngeal aspirate and nasopharyngeal swabs.
  Collect: Place in viral transport media.
  Volume: 3.0 mL wash or aspirate 2.0 mL minimum
  Transport: Refrigerate Must be received in lab within 72 hours.
  Comment: Unacceptable conditions: Slides, smears and BAL and bronchial washing specimens.
  Reference Range: Negative for Influenza type A and Influenza type B. A negative screen does not rule out the presence of influenza virus.
