Testing Results
Comment: Sites submitting specimens for testing must be approved by the Nebraska Health and Human Services System's Epidemiology Program within the Department of Regulation and Licensure.

A Special Microbiology Requisition or order must accompany the specimens.

  TEST: Culture, Herpes Simplex with reflex to HSV typing

  Availability: Daily by 1300; Results in 1-7days.
  Specimen: Vessicle fluid and cell from lesion
CSF
  Collect: Starswab Multitrans Collection and Transport System/swab. For virus, chlamydia and mycoplasma. Store transport kits refrigerated prior to use.
Specimen Collection:
1. Aseptically remove sterile swab from package.
2. Collect specimen by vigorously swabbing site involved.
3. Aseptically remove cap from vial. 5. Replace cap to vial. Close tightly.
6. Fill out vial label with patients name, date of birth, and source of specimen.
7. Refrigerate during transport.
  Volume: Adequate specimen for culture.
  Transport: Refrigerate
  Comment: Culture held for 7 days.
Special Instructions: Place specimen in viral transport medium. Viral Culturette or other commercially available viral transport systems are satisfactory.
Unacceptable conditions: Samples in non-viral transport media, bacteria culture swabs, Dry swabs, Wood swabs, calcium alginate swabs, samples in EIA and Probetec transport media.
  Reference Range: No CPE detected at 7 days.
If positive add DFA HSV typing for HSV type 1 and 2.
  Additional Info: Special Instructions: Place specimen in viral transport medium. Viral Culturette or other commercially available viral transport systems are satisfactory. Do not use Calgiswabs.
To collect a sample the lesion must be unroofed using a Dacron swab, which is then placed in a viral transport medium and received in the laboratory within 24 hours.
