Comment: Sites submitting specimens for testing must be approved by the Nebraska Health and Human Services System's Epidemiology Program within the Department of Regulation and Licensure.

A Special Microbiology Requisition or order must accompany the specimens.

  TEST: Culture, Bordetella Pertussis
  Synonym: Pertussis whooping cough
  Lab Defined: Microbiology
  Admin Section: Microbiology
  Method: Standard reference procedures for B. pertussis culture and identification.
  Availability: Daily ; Results within 7 days.
  Specimen: Nasopharyngeal wash or swab.
  Collect: Collect with Amies Charcoal swab.
  Volume:
  Transport: Ambient
  Comment: Unacceptable specimens: specimens not transported in the correct media. Note source of specimen on lab order form. Notification of positive results is provided.
  Reference Range: Negative for Bordetella pertussis.
  Additional Info: Consult Laboratory for collection/delivery instructions if transport time is greater than 24 hours. Positive results are called.
